Brief Introduction to Yoga
Hatha
Yoga is a branch of Yoga - the one that is most easily recognised by
people everywhere. Yoga means ‘to join’, ‘unity’.
It is the state through which the individual consciousness is joined
with the universal consciousness, bringing about a profound sense of
unity.
Bringing this sense of harmony to our lives is done through the practice of posture work, breath practice and meditation (meditation is done separately on Quiet Days and Residential Retreats).
These Yoga classes are a place of relaxation, concentration
and focus. You will learn a variety of exercises, e.g., standing, sitting
and lying postures along with traditional breathing techniques.
Yoga is non-competitive and everyone is encouraged to work within his or her own capability. The classes are mixed ability enabling practitioners to progress at their own pace.
Attending a Yoga Class
Wait for at least 1-1/2hr – 2hrs after eating, before practicing yoga. You will need to bring a yoga mat, an exercise strap for assistance with legwork and a yoga block, some yogis and yoginis also like to have a blanket for use in the kneeling postures. Wear loose clothing. Yoga is traditionally practised with bare feet.
