Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI©)

Myers-Briggs type Indicator is a system of personality evaluation is based on the psychological type theories of the psychologist Carl Jung, later developed by Isabel Briggs and Katherine Myers. It is based on the fact that as individuals we have different preferences, for instance for extroversion or introversion, or between sensory knowing and intuitive knowing. MBTI© puts forward 16 'personality types', each with their own different strengths, weaknesses and preferences in life. Each 'type' is given a four letter name, e.g. ENFP (Extrovert INtuitive Feeling Perceiving).

Knowing their MBTI 'type' helps people understand themselves and people around them more clearly, and with this knowledge they are better able to define their direction, know their strengths and capabilities, and market themselves more successfully to prospective employers. It is also used for gaining a deeper understanding of personal relationships, especially marriage and family relationships.

Since the late 1970s MBTI© has been used in organisations and governments for improving such areas as team building, relationship counselling, management and leadership skills, communication, training and career development. It has been validated by extensive research, has proved highly reliable, and is used by a growing number of national and multinational companies. On average around 3.5 million people per year use MBTI© worldwide.

Notes: Certified MBTI© career consultants provide clients with a questionnaire, which is then scored and discussed, in order to ascertain whether the client agrees that the resulting personality type is a 'good fit'. The qualities associated with that type are then discussed, together with pointers as to how one may use one's strengths for professional advancement, and overcome any weaknesses.
