Autogenic Training

Autogenic Training is a self-help method which can bring about profound relaxation and relief from the negative effects of excessive stress. 'Autogenic' means 'generated from within'. The technique mobilises our innate systems for healing and recuperation. Autogenic Therapy consists of a series of simple, easily learned mental exercises which link mind and body together in association with deep relaxation. These exercises allow the mind to calm itself by switching off the body's stress responses. Once learned, AT is a useful life skill, providing the inner resources to maintain healthy balance and deal with stress in body and mind.

Notes: Many people learn the method to improve their efficiency, mobilise their creativity and help them to stay well. AT has been successfully used to alleviate symptoms of insomnia, panic attacks, high blood pressure, asthma, phobias, irritable bowel syndrome, migraine and many other conditions with stress components.

AT has also been used to support psychotherapy for depression and anxiety and to significantly reduce the possibility of relapses (Krampen, 1999). AT is used to support people undergoing treatment for cancer, and it has been shown to have a positive effect on immune system functioning (Hidderley & Holt, 2003).
